Shermayn Menicoche awarded NWT Chamber scholarship

September 9th, 2009

The NWT Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce Shermayn Menicoche is the winner of this year’s $2,500 scholarship.

“We are extremely pleased by the number and quality of applications we received this year,” said NWT Chamber President Ann Marie Tout. “Students applied from every region of the NWT and we thank them all for their efforts and interest.”

Menicoche, who is originally from Wrigley but now calls Fort Simpson home, was selected as the winner of the 2009 scholarship due to her high marks and long list of accomplishments while attending the Management Studies Program at Aurora College’s Fort Smith campus. While there she was co-chair of the Grad Committee, a member of the Student Appeals Board, Vice-President of Communication for the Aurora College Student Association and a tireless volunteer and avid soccer player.

“Shermayn put together a tremendous package for our judges to consider and we are very happy to award her our $2,500 scholarship for this year,” said Tout.

Menicoche, who is now enrolled in the University of Lethbridge where she is pursuing her Bachelor of Management, said she was thrilled when she heard that she had won.

“I’m very grateful and honoured to receive the NWT Chamber scholarship,” she said. “This feels like the entire NWT business community is behind me while I’m here at school.”

Menicoche said she definitely plans to return to live and work in the NWT after graduation and is looking forward to exploring what opportunities are open to here after she earns her degree.

In association with the network of community chambers of commerce in Fort Simpson, Behchoko, Norman Wells, Fort Smith, Hay River and Yellowknife as well as the Northern Aboriginal Business Association, the NWT Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of more than 865 members. For more than 35 years, it has been the only pan-territorial voice of businesses across all sectors of the Northern economy.
