NWT Business Community Ready to Support Quick Leadership Action on Speech from the Throne

(Yellowknife, NT / June 3, 2025) Last week, His Majesty King Charles III, King of Canada delivered Canada’s Speech from the Throne, BUILDING CANADA STRONG: A bold, ambitious plan for our future. In his opening comments, King Charles stated: This moment is an incredible opportunity for renewal. An opportunity to think big and to act bigger. An opportunity for Canada to embark on the largest transformation of its economy since the Second World War.

Some of the many actions, opportunities and commitments identified in the Speech include:

  • Working closely with provinces, territories, and Indigenous Peoples, identify and catalyse projects of national significance, that will connect Canada, that will deepen Canada’s ties with the world, and that will create high-paying jobs for generations.

  • Increasing support for Indigenous equity participation in energy and resource development.

  • Protecting Canada’s sovereignty including investment to strengthen its presence in the North, an integral part of Canada.

  • Addressing housing deficits and helping first time buyers.

  • Providing new resources to combat drug trafficking in communities.

  • Creating one strong Canadian economy from thirteen and building the strongest economy in the G7.

President of the NWT Chamber of Commerce, Newton Grey stated: “Our underdeveloped resources and deserving residents and communities have languished economically for too long. Now is our time to shine. The Throne Speech offers us an unprecedented opportunity to improve the lives of our residents, to invest in much-needed infrastructure, and to harness our resources to advance our economy and perhaps even finally become a net contributor to the Canadian federation.”

“The Northwest Territories must be a strong contributor to Canada’s core mission to build the strongest economy in the G7”, urged Grey. “On behalf of our membership, we urge the NWT Government and its Indigenous partners, along with our newly elected Member of Parliament and now Cabinet Minister, and the GNWT’s newly created Senior Envoy in Ottawa to move quickly to seize the opportunities presented and that we so desperately need in the NWT.”

“Our Chamber stands prepared to help in any way we can.”
